Gautam Gambhir on Sunday broke Sunil Gavaskar's test record when he scored his sixth Test century in his 25th Test surpassing the number of runs in the first 25 tests score of Sunil Gavaskar's tally of 2256 (average of 52.47). Gambhir now has 2271 runs (average of 54.07), the most by an Indian. In 25 matches, Gambhir has also scored 10 half-centuries and a double hundred. In the three test matches in New Zealand, Gambhir has scored 445 runs at an average of 89. Since his return on December 2007, after a gap of two years, Gambhir has scored 1587 runs in just 12 Tests at an average of 144.
