The Indian goverment made many attempts to halt the auction of the memorabilia of Mahatma Gandhi but failed to do so. But no worry, it was Mr Vijay Mallya , Chairman of the United Breweries Group and Kingfisher Airlines who ended up winning the memorabilia for a price tag of $1.8 million (nearly Rs 9.3 crore) at a New York auction. The items won include his round rimmed spectacles, leather sandals, 1910 silver Zenith pocket watch and the brass bowl and plate. Vijay Mallya plans to donate the items to be placed in a museum.
